What is it like moving from Australia to the US

What’s it like moving from Australia to USA?

What’s it like moving from Australia to USA is our topic for today’s Immigration Story.

At the end of 2015 Andrew McClymont moved from Australia to the USA to join his wife, who’d just been granted a full scholarship to college-university for Australians.  Andrew is from Queensland and his wife from East Timor, so it seemed like a great opportunity to start afresh in the USA.

Moving from Australia to the USA, Andrew was able to take his business plan, along with plenty of energy, and start a new endeavour selling healthy food to Americans.  His business is going well and growing slowly without the need to invest more capital.

Cultural Similarities:

He’s found while culturally Canada, NZ & Britain are quite similar to Australia, America can be quite different (while being the same) … he describes Americans as hyper friendly and polite, and genuinely very courteous people.

Like Australia, areas of the USA are vastly different from the rest.  Vermont (up near Canada) for example, is very much like Tasmania with stunning scenery and great people, without being over-populated.  If you like New South Wales, Victoria or South Australian weather you could look at Southern California as it will be a similar climate… albeit slightly dryer.  Florida would be more like Queensland. While Las Vegas or southern Nevada will be hotter than most places in Australia – so more suited to the Northern Territory.

In short, Andrew sums up America as having a place for everyone.  Dozens of cities each with their own character, from rural states with sparse population similar to the Australian outback, to mountain or beach towns with countless bars, cafes, artists and hippies all doing their own thing.

Super Sizing:

The USA really does super-size everything… be it cars, sports or most other interests.  There’s probably thousands dedicated to your particular craft or hobby in the USA… and they’ll likely all meet up at least once a year at a huge event.
